- The minutes of the
meeting dated 26th September 2005 were agreed.
- RV pointed out in
respect of point 8 of the minutes that since 26/9 the junior membership
had increased. Membership now stood at 8-10 juniors, with the team top
of their league. He added that he wanted to encourage the juniors by by
arranging matches between them and good seniors, such as Guy Olby and
Ian Smith. OP announced that on 20th and 29th
December 2005 squash open days were to be held, and that he would
circulate local schools.
- OP said that to date
30 squash members had not paid the annual subscription due by 31st
October. He added that if they had not paid by the end of November they
would be ousted from the club, and that subsequent re-joiners would be
required to pay a re-joining fee of £25 in addition to the subscription.
- OP complained that the
floors of both the long room and men’s changing rooms were left with mud
after football matches. IM said that this problem had been brought to
the attention of general committee member responsible for football, John
Pearce.
- IM said that John
Joyce would be asked to pay for shirts for juniors with the club squash
logo. RV added that at junior matches such shirts would make the squash
section appear more professional, and suggested that twenty shirts be
ordered.
- OP suggested that a
team squash evening be held every alternate Friday evening, and he would
ask manager Graham Watts to put up notices in the club.
- RV suggested that a
list of email addresses of squash members be supplied to the squash
committee to enable the committee to circulate minutes of meetings and
forthcoming events.
- OP suggested that the
annual squash and racketball tournament in 2006 be held at the end of
April, between Easter (15/04) and the squash AGM (15/05). RV said
he would add this to the website.
- LE mentioned that at
its meeting dated 14/11/2005, the general committee had recommended an
increase to the £3 court booking fee, which had remained unchanged for
approximately 5 years. IM suggested that the squash committee would
consider an increase to £4, provided that new fan-driven heaters be
installed on courts 1 and 2, and that a consultant be brought in to
assess both the cost of re-sanding the floors of all four courts, and to
replace the floors entirely.
- MW added that it would
be unfair to expect the ladies to pay an increased court booking fee
given that there was no heating in the ladies’ changing room, a
particular problem during the winter, and that joins between the tiles
of the showers had accumulated black mould which ought to be cleaned.
- RV suggested that the
squash section’s 70th anniversary in 2006 be marked by a
tournament for top players such as Guy Olby, Colin Payne, and Matthew
Gill, and added that he had already spoken to these players. OP’s
suggestion that players use wooden rackets was rejected by the
committee. The tournament would be held on a Saturday in July, followed
by a disco and barbecue open to all club members, rather than just the
squash section.
- MW suggested that
student players be allowed to pay reduced squash subscriptions, as they
were often away at university and could only use the club’s facilities
for short periods when at home. She cited Hannah Tye as an example. RV
added that several of the junior players should also be entitled to a
reduction when they start university, and that it would be a good idea
to offer them reduced fees to keep them involved with club. The meeting
concurred.
- The date of the next
meeting was fixed for Tuesday, 17th January 2006.
